Wong Sheung
Artist with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: stART Up Community Arts Project
When did you realise that you loved drawing?
My dad was fond of calligraphy and my mum liked Chinese drawing. I was inspired by them as a child and have loved drawing ever since. When I was six, I was a big fan of the Japanese animation series Sailor Moon. I used to draw while I was watching. My mum saw that I was good at it, so she bought me a sketchpad and a drawing and painting kit.
What are the challenges of working as an illustrator with a hearing impairment?
It can be a bit hard. Once I wanted to take part in a publishing exhibition, but in the end I gave up as I couldn’t make a speech. I decided to take a step back. People will soon notice my work if I keep working hard.
Who are the biggest supporters on your path as an illustrator? What would you like to say to them?
My family. Thanks for always supporting me. I’ll keep trying to do my best!
How would you describe the style of your work?
Simple, bright and calm.
What surprised you most about working on The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: stART Up Community Arts Project?
At first, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to handle the event with my hearing impairment. But after we started, I discovered a new ability. The teachers and students were able to meet people with different abilities and be inspired. The event was so meaningful for promoting an inclusive society. Thanks for inviting me!
What is the message behind the artworks created in the project?
Embrace your weaknesses and focus on what you can do. My hope is for a more friendly and respectful world.
What advice would you give to young people with disabilities who are passionate about the arts?
Do what you love. It’s okay to fail. We all grow from our failures.
Which artist do you admire the most?
The Spanish painter Antonio Lopez Garcia, the Norwegian painter Lars Elling, and the American illustrator Rebecca Green, their works are colourful and warm.
